Mini Laptops

With a recent shoulder injury, the 20 lb Dell XPS (with battery and power supply) appears to be heavier than normal. It's interesting that the laptop sizes are going to the two extremes, the powerful ones are evolving from 13 inch to 14 inch to 17 inch to 20.1 inch (Dell XPS M2010)! On the other hand, the manufacturers are also making the laptops to the mini end: 12 inch to 11 inch to 10 inch to 6 inch (the world smallest laptop – Sony VAIO UX)!

Among all of the mini laptops, the 10 inch laptops seem to be the most “popular” and “mature” laptop products. Sony and Fujitsu were the first two companies that started the mini laptop series. But other laptop producers like Acer, Lenovo (IBM) and Apple immediately jump onto the mini laptop wagon.

This obviously is driven by the consumers. There are people like me looking for more powerful desktop replacement laptops, but there are people like my co-workers (whom owns the first generation of mini laptops – SONY VGN-UX) refuses to carry around heavy laptops. It seems more people I know are looking for the smaller solution at the moment, here I find a few models for their selections.

1. The newer version of my co-worker's Sony mini laptop is Sony VAIO VGN-T350P/L. The entire laptop weight only 3.04 lb, it uses Intel M 1.2GHz, 2MB cache memory, 512MB DDR SDRAM, 60 GB 4200 RPM hard drive, 10.6 WXGA LCD display, 10/100M wireless network card and an INTERNAL DVD Recorder! The VGN-T350P/L battery supports up to 9 hours of operation! Wow, my XPS battery only supports up to 2.5 hours and a risk of explosion! :) The advantage of this mini laptop is it's from a reliable series, my co-worker whom own the fist generation of Sony mini laptop has been using it for 3 years and barely had any problems.
mini Laptop Sony Vaio Vgn2.Fujitsu LifeBook P7230 (FPCM21122) has a nice look, the cool colored titanium skin make it attractive to young people and female laptop consumers. This laptop weight only 2.55 lb! Here is the default configuration with the mini laptop: Intel ULV Core Solo U1400 CPU (1.2GHz,Intel 945GMS chip set),1024MB DDR2 RAM,80GB hard drive,build-in DVD/CDRW,10.6 inch LCD. What's special about this laptop is it comes with 2 batteries by default and 2 USB 2.0 ports and 1 fire wire port, a multi-card reader, and a wireless network card. Pretty much everything you will need when you are on the road. The advantage of this laptop is it's light weight and more memory)

mini laptop fujitsu3.Another one I really like is Averatec 1050-EB1 (AV1050EB1) , it is a Korean brand. The only wide screen mini laptop in the market I think. Weight 3.6 lb. Very slick design, dark red (wine color) skin and milk white keyboard makes it really attractive to the fashion seekers. The set-up of this computer is: Intel 1.1GHz M ULV 733 CPU (855GME chip set),512MB DDR RAM,10.6 inch WXGA LCD (a very bright wide screen mini laptop with brightness of 240cd/m2),80GB hard drive, and an internal DVD/CD -RW Drive. It also got both USB and Fire Wire ports, also D-SUB, Type II PC card slot, MMC/SD/MS/MS Pro multi card reader and built-in 802.11b/g wireless card. The advantage of this mini-laptop is it's crystal clear wide screen LCD display.

mini laptop AveratecThese are the top three mini laptops in the market today. However the mini laptops are often expensive and when you put all the processing power into a compact package, you can expect things may go wrong soon or later. So, choose wisely and carefully.

Fujitsu LifeBook T2010 Laptop

fujitsu-lifebook-t2010-laptopFujitsu's LifeBook T2010 doesn't deliver the leading-edge style of the Dell XPS M1330 or the performance of the Lenovo ThinkPad X61 we tested recently. But this 3.5-pound ultraportable ($2,279 in our test configuration; models start at $1,599) does have a lot going for it—namely, a convertible 12.1-inch wide-screen display that turns the laptop into a tablet. Business and home users who need a lightweight machine will appreciate the T2010's dual personality, even if it does come with a handful of caveats.

Let's start with the looks. While the T2010's black exterior will never go out of style, it's rather bland compared with more fashion-conscious ultraportables such as the Toshiba Portégé R400 and the Asus S6F. Still, the T2010 feels solid in the hand, and at less than an inch thick, it's easy to carry.

Plus, it's loaded with features, such as a fingerprint reader, PC Card and memory-card slots, FireWire, two USB ports, LAN and modem jacks, and (showing its business bent) a SmartCard reader. There's also Draft-N Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, and Fujitsu says it will make wireless broadband available early in 2008. The only thing missing is an integrated optical drive; you'll have to get one of Fujitsu's compatible docking solutions or an external USB-connected drive. While that's typical for an ultraportable, a few other makers (namely Toshiba and Sony) have managed to squeeze onboard optical drives into this weight class.

The T2010's controls are decent, with a comfortable full-size keyboard and a pointing stick for navigation instead of a touch pad. (The battery pack juts into the space where a pad would normally reside.) The stick isn't as comfortable as those on a ThinkPad, as it sits too flush with the key tops, but it gets the job done.

Flip the notebook's latchless lid, and you'll find a crisp, bright, 12.1-inch wide-screen display. The panel's 1,280x800 resolution offers a comfortable work environment, and even small text is easily legible. If you do connect a DVD drive, you'll be rewarded with vibrant video that looks terrific. The only disappointment here is the weak audio coming from the machine's single speaker. It's good enough for the sounds and jingles of Windows, but headphones are in order for anything more.

The T2010's real attraction is its tablet functionality. Open the screen 90 degrees, and you can swivel it on its bi-directional center hinge and lay it flat to turn the laptop into a tablet. A button on the screen's bezel rotates the screen image. As for workability, the panel's viewing-angle performance is excellent from all directions, and the T2010 is light enough to let you use the machine comfortably as a slate. But the big display makes it hard to hold the T2010 for long stretches. So if you're going to use the tablet for serious lengths of time, you'll want to rest it on your lap or another surface.

The pen-driven panel, meanwhile, has excellent accuracy, and the handwriting recognition is admirable, even without training—not perfect, mind you, but still surprisingly good. The handy Tablet PC Input Panel interface docks itself to the left side of the screen and opens with a click. It lets you quickly add notes to just about any open app, and the shortcuts for oft-used entries (such as "www" and ".com") speed things along. Business users with custom pen-aware apps are the obvious target for a tablet like this, but we can also see the benefits for home users looking to surf the Internet while lounging on the couch. You wouldn't want to do extensive text input with the pen, but it's ideal for tasks where you are mostly reading and clicking.

As for endurance, Fujitsu claims "all-day" battery life for the T2010. Using the optional nine-cell battery, we got 4 hours and 15 minutes of runtime on our DVD rundown test with all power-saving features disabled. (Note, though, that the external DVD drive uses its own power source, not the T2010's battery.) In real-world use, with power-management features enabled, you should see more than 6 hours of running time per charge.

We did find a glitch with our test unit's power management: Closing the lid did not put the machine into sleep mode, even if it was set to do so in the Control Panel. And be warned that the nine-cell battery protrudes from the front edge of the machine by about half an inch. (The standard six-cell pack sits flush.)

All of which leads to another big issue: performance. To get the good battery life it did, Fujitsu went with a miserly ultra-low-voltage (ULV) processor. The Intel Core 2 Duo U7600 is a decent choice as far as ULV CPUs go, but it can't match Intel's T-series chips in performance. The T2010 booted to Windows Vista in about 2 minutes (faster machines take 1.5 minutes or less), delivered a score of just 2,731 on Futuremark's PCMark05, and completed our iTunes conversion test in just over 9 minutes. By way of comparison, the ThinkPad X61, a fairly speedy ultraportable, scored 4,000 on PCMark05 and completed our iTunes task in 5 minutes and 15 seconds. Not surprisingly, the T2010 is no game machine: It scored a very low 436 on Futuremark's 3DMark06. We didn't even bother running our game tests when we saw that result.

Our test unit came with Windows Vista Business, which includes the tablet functionality from the previous generation of the OS. Fujitsu offers Windows XP Tablet PC Edition, as well, which we suspect will run a bit quicker on this hardware. You also get EverNote Plus, an excellent note-taking and organizational utility that's a must for tablet users (and handy for traditional PC users, too).

All told, the LifeBook T2010 delivers solid functionality for the price. If you're in the market for an ultraportable and think you might make use of the tablet feature, it's worth a look.

Fujitsu Notebook Computer - Top Laptop Computer

Taipei  - Taiwan's Inventec plans to build a fourth notebook computer manufacturing plant to meet an expected increase in global demand, a newspaper said on Sunday. Inventec, which is the main contract notebook computer maker for Toshiba and Hewlett-Packard, had a slack season in the first quarter, the Commercial Times reported. However, Inventec expects its output to rise by 10 to 15 per cent in the second quarter as Toshiba's laptop battery production returns to normal and Acer, which became the world's No 3 notebook brand in 2007, is expected to place more orders with Inventec, the daily said.

Currently Inventec's facilities can manufacture 20 million notebook computer each year, the paper said. But if there is a 20 per cent increase in world demand for notebook computers, Inventec will build its fourth notebook computer plant in late 2008 or early 2009, to expand its annual output to 30 million notebook computers.Inventec was founded in 1975 to make electric calculators. But over the years it has developed into a manufacturer of high-tech electronic products like notebook computers, servers and wireless products.
Inventec produced about 10 million notebook computers and 20 million servers in 2007. It is the world's top original design manufacturing (ODM) server maker and one of the top five notebook computer makers. (dpa)

Top Notebook Series

Top Notebook Series, Fujitsu LifeBook S7211
Fujitsu LifeBook S7211
This svelte $899 Windows Vista Business laptop has only two significant drawbacks: so-so speed, and an inability to burn DVDs. The S7211 notched a WorldBench 6 score of 56, putting it 14 percent behind the average of 65 earned by the five sub-$1000 laptops we mentioned. Aside from a minor glare problem, the 14.1-inch, 1280 x 800 resolution screen is crisp and readable. We quickly acclimated to the petite keyboard, which features Fujitsu's dual-purpose Security Application Panel (numbered buttons for shortcut keys or a password). The S7211 weighs 5.2 pounds with a CD writer/DVD reader installed in its modular bay. Swap this optical drive out for a battery instead ($120 extra), and Fujitsu says you can get about 6.5 hours of operation. Battery life of this unit lasted an average 3.8 hours with a single battery.
