Upgrading DELL Laptop Computer Memory

It is not hard at all to buy a new memory chip for your computer, but it’s really difficult and dangerous to install the memory into the memory slot. Upgrading a Dell laptop computer memory should be performed only by a technician that has been previously trained by Dell and who knows how to handle a Dell computer and knows to react when something unexpected occurs. Usually the Dell memories have around 4 GB. Some of them let you expand the memory to 8 GB. Some Dell desktop computers let you upgrade the memory up to 12 GB. This is indeed a huge amount of memory, which is nowadays hard to place inside a laptop computer, which is smaller than a desktop and runs at a lower speed.

In reality, the technician doesn’t fix anything; he just upgrades an internal component. The upgrading must be performed with the laptop battery removed from the computer and with the notebook disconnected from the wall outlet and also from other electronic devices that are normally connected to the computer, like the printer and the scanner. You should remove the battery, because by mistake you could press the power button and the computer might load the operating system. The last thing you would want to happen is your computer starting up. You should not upgrade the computer memory in the first year of using the computer. The notebook will be the one that will require to add more memory chips, if you have the possibility to do that. And by possibility I don’t mean to financial possibilities, but to the option offered by the manufacturer to upgrade the memory. Some computers come with the memory already upgrated if you can say something like this. This means that the manufacturer doesn’t let you to upgrade the memory in the computer, because you can’t do this. The memory module doesn’t allow you to.

After you add more chips inside the memory module, you have to see if the BIOS recognizes the new memory. You have to use the same type of memory. For example, if you have a DDR memory, then you must buy another DDR memory chip. The situation applies for DDR2 and DDR3 memory types. If the computer supports 8 GB and you already use 4 GB, then for an upgrade you can buy another memory chip of 4 GB or two of 2 GB. Or you can remove the first two chips containing each 2 GB and replace them with a single chip that includes 4 GB. You can do a lot of combinations, as long as the technology lets you. If there weren’t memory chips of 2 GB or 4 GB, then you would be forced to use memory chips of 1 GB.
