Guide to Installing Laptop Memory Illustrated How-to
Difficulty: Easy
Time: 10-15 Minutes
Tools: Small Philips Screwdriver
Installing a laptop memory upgrade the easy way.
Where To Begin?
Installing laptop memory is going to be easier than you can imagine. As a first step of course you will need to know a few things about your particular laptop. You will need to know what specific memory your laptop uses, how much your laptop currently has installed, and the maximum amount your laptop supports among other things.
Don’t worry, this is easy as pie!
If you don’t know how much you system currently has, Windows users simply go into the control panel and access the System Properties. You will find your memory size under the general tab within.
Once you know how much your laptop has, we personally recommend Crucial’s (www.crucial.com) Memory Advisor tool for it walks you step-by-step through selecting the correct laptop memory upgrade for your specific computer.
The Memory Advisor tool is awesome for it shows how many slots you have, maximum amount that your laptop accepts, and even memory speed among other things. We highly recommend it when installing laptop memory for it is a valuable yet easy to use tool. By the way, Crucial makes great memory too.
On with the installation!
Installing Laptop Memory - Illustrated guide
Step 1:
Turn off the computer, remove all power cords, and finally take out the battery. Batteries are typically removed using a small mechanical switch. Push the switch in the proper direction and simply pull the battery out.
Step 2: Locate the small panel on the bottom of the laptop concealing the memory modules. Most manufacturers make it easy to find the memory module locations. Often you will see a tiny “M” or other illustration next to the panel. If necessary you can always reference the manual.
Note: Keep in mind when installing laptop memory that some laptops have memory modules in other locations like under the keyboard for example. Unfortunately we aren’t covering this type of installation in this guide because it is slightly more complex and specific to each laptop. However, please don’t hesitate to contact us if you’d like some free advice.
Step 3: Remove the small screws holding the panel in place and then put panel and screws aside in a safe place so you don’t lose them.
Step 4: When installing laptop memory you may need to take out an existing module to make room.
To remove existing modules find the small clamps on each side of the module and gently move them both outwards from the memory module slightly until the module pops up at about a 40-degree angle.
If you are unsure at this point simply take a breath and briefly study things until the picture comes together. The clamp mechanism is actually rather simple.
Once the memory module is at the 40-degree angle you simply pull it out at the same angle gently.
Step 5: To install simply align the notch of the memory module with the memory slot and gently push the module into the slot at a 40-degree angle, and once you can see that the pins are in the slot gently rotate the module down flat until the clamps lock it in place. That’s it, easy right?
Step 6: Replace the memory panel securing it with the screws, pop the laptop battery back in place, and finally plug in the laptop.
Great job you’re almost done.

Now that you are done physically installing laptop memory you will only need to verify that you computer did in fact properly detect it.
While it depends on the laptop, many will give you a brief message similar to “Your system memory size has changed” once you turn it on. Sometimes you may need to press an F1 or other key to continue when prompted but that’s usually about all there is to installing laptop memory.
You are done performing a laptop memory upgrade. Easier than you thought, right?
Congratulations!
How To Install Computer Memory
If you have noticed that it takes a long time for your computer to boot up or if you a receiving message saying "windows is increasing your virtual memory" when you are trying to open applications on your computer then it is time for a RAM, or memory upgrade.
This is one of the cheapest and most beneficial upgrades that can be done on your computer. Once you find out what type of RAM you need it is a breeze to install. First we will discuss how to find out what type of RAM you need and where to get it from. There are a few things that you need to know first. Some computers require that RAM be installed in pairs, meaning that if you currently have 256MB of RAM then you have 2 banks and each bank has a 128MB stick of RAM installed. There is also a maximum amount of RAM that a computer can hold. Most newer computers can hold anywhere from 2GB to 4GB of RAM. There are a few sites that will tell you what type of RAM you need, if you need to install it in pairs and how much RAM your computer can hold. www.memory.com and www.crucial.com are the 2 top sites that do this. I will usually check both of these sites just to make sure that they both have the same info. You can pick either one to get started. I will walk you through going to memory.com. Once on their site you will want to go to "RAM Memory Upgrade" and then select "Memory Configurator" You will now need to select your computer model. and click select. You will see standard memory, this is more than likely what is already in your system. You will also see maximum memory as well as how many banks you have in your computer and the speed and type of RAM you will need. It would be best to write down the number at the end of the comments, it should start with DDR or SD. You can purchase RAM from memory.com, but I would recommend looking at www.newegg.com first since their prices are usually cheaper. Once on newegg.com you will want go to "memory" from the menu on the left. You will then need to select either desktop or laptop and from there you will be able to drill down with the info from memory.com. You will see many RAM manufactures, personally I would stick to either Kingston, PQI, or PNY. These are the ones that I find to be most reliable. It is still important to read the reviews though.
OK so now you are ready to install you new RAM. The first thing that you will need to do is to turn your computer off. You will need a phillips head and a flat head screwdriver.
If you have a desktop you will need to remove the side cover, to do this you should see 2 phillips screws on the back side where the side panel meets the case. Unscrew the 2 screws and press the side panel toward the back of the computer. You will see the slots that contain RAM. They may be either purple or black and they will have a plastic clip on each side.
You will need to press on the white tabs first. If you need to remove any RAM just press on the white tabs and then lift the RAM straight out of the computer. To install your new RAM you need to make sure that both white tabs are open and then you will need to look at the orientation on your RAM. It will have a gap in it, one side is longer than the other. You need to make sure that this matches with the motherboard. RAM will only install one way. If only one side snaps in and the other end is sticking up then you need to flip it around. Once it is lined up correctly you will need to press straight down until you hear it click into place. Each clip should go back to its original position, sometimes you need to press the clip back into place. Now turn your computer on and make sure that it sees the new memory by right clicking on "My Computer" and going to properties. You will see how much RAM you have installed towards the bottom.
If you have a laptop, follow the above instructions as far as shutting down your computer. You will need to flip your laptop over and you will see a panel on the bottom with a "M" marked on it. Take the screws out and pop the panel out, there should be a grove in it to get your finger nail under.
You will see a metal tab on each side of the RAM, to remove the RAM you need to press each tab toward the outside of the laptop, the RAM will then pop up at an angle, you can now remove the RAM. Installation is about the same, you need to insert the RAM at an angle, the same rule applies as mentioned above, the RAM has a groove in it so you need to line it up before you will be able to install it. Once inserted at an angle you will need to press down until it snaps into place. Once done put your panel back on and boot into Windows to verify that it is showing up. You are all done. India plans $10 or Rs 500 laptop computers for everybody: Sakshat is it for real?
Top scientists from its Institutes of Technology in Bangalore and Madras had developed the machines which will run on low power, with low memory but be able to connect wirelessly to the internet.- Prototype of the new laptop will be unveiled in Tirupati this week and has been produced for £14.
- The machine can be charged with a 2 watt power input, has a 2 GB memory.
Given that the IT industry is the poster child of India’s growth story, the disjunction between its growing profile and the model of higher education in the country as it exists now is a cause for concern. India’s demographics are in its favour; the youth bulge guarantees a steady supply of manpower that, ideally, should drive the industry’s expansion. The problem is that graduates produced by thousands of institutes around the country have little to no computer literacy or experience with modern networking technology. At a time when education is increasingly being seen as a prime economic driver, a vast resource is being wasted instead of being leveraged. The national education programme could rectify this.
The benefits will be twofold. The programme could not just improve the quality and broaden the skill-set of graduates but bring in those who slip through the cracks. Currently, India’s gross enrolment ratio for higher education is 11 per cent, inadequate at best and abysmal when seen in the context of countries such as the US and Canada with 60 per cent. A more balanced comparison with other BRIC nations is not particularly flattering either; their ratios hover around the 21 per cent mark. With the goal of providing not just the laptop but internet connectivity as well to over 18,000 colleges, outreach through e-learning and distance education, a key component of the programme, is one way to make inroads into the problem.
The computing device has been developed by Vellore Institute of Technology students and scientists at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and Indian Institute of Technology, Madras. The laptop will be named as ‘Sakshat’ and will bringing in a computer revolution of sorts in the country.

Belkin F5Loo1 Laptop Cooling Stand
Laptop’s generate a lot of heat and some even generate heat as high as 120 degrees. That can wear your laptop down and cause it to crash. It can also cause unwanted heat on the body, making you remove the laptop from your lap. The Belkin F5Loo1 Laptop Cooling Stand relies on the natural flow of heat and air circulation to do the hard work and needs only one fan to do the trick. Instead of drawing laptop heat down to push it out, the stand takes full advantage of natural air flow and heats natural tendency to rise by pushing the hot air upward through the channel and away from your laptop.
