WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed. It is illegal to resell or attempt to resell a recalled consumer product.

Name of Product: Certain VAIO TZ-series Notebook Computers

Units: About 73,000

Manufacturer: Sony Electronics Inc., of San Diego, Calif.

Hazard: Irregularly positioned wires near the computer’s hinge and/or a dislodged screw inside the hinge can cause a short circuit and overheating. This poses a burn hazard to consumers.

Incidents/Injuries: Sony has received 15 reports of overheating, including one consumer who suffered a minor burn.

Description: The recalled notebook computer models are the VAIO VGN-TZ100 series, VGN-TZ200 series, VGN-TZ300 series and VGN-TZ2000 series. The computers’ screen size is about 11.1” measured diagonally. Not all units are affected; consumers should contact Sony to determine if their unit is included in the recall.

Sold by: The SonyStyle stores and Web site, authorized electronics retailers, and authorized business-to-business dealers nationwide from July 2007 through August 2008 for between $1,700 and $4,000.

Remedy: Consumers should stop using the recalled notebook computers immediately and contact Sony to determine if their notebook is affected. The firm will arrange for an inspection and repair, if needed.

Wow, my XPS battery only supports up to 2.5 hours and a risk of explosion! :) The advantage of this mini laptop is it's from a reliable series, my co-worker whom own the fist generation of Sony mini laptop has been using it for 3 years and barely had any problems.

2.Fujitsu LifeBook P7230 (FPCM21122) has a nice look, the cool colored titanium skin make it attractive to young people and female laptop consumers. This laptop weight only 2.55 lb! Here is the default configuration with the mini laptop: Intel ULV Core Solo U1400 CPU (1.2GHz，Intel 945GMS chip set)，1024MB DDR2 RAM，80GB hard drive，build-in DVD/CDRW，10.6 inch LCD. What's special about this laptop is it comes with 2 batteries by default and 2 USB 2.0 ports and 1 fire wire port, a multi-card reader, and a wireless network card. Pretty much everything you will need when you are on the road. The advantage of this laptop is it's light weight and more memory)

3.Another one I really like is Averatec 1050-EB1 (AV1050EB1) , it is a Korean brand. The only wide screen mini laptop in the market I think. Weight 3.6 lb. Very slick design, dark red (wine color) skin and milk white keyboard makes it really attractive to the fashion seekers. The set-up of this computer is: Intel 1.1GHz M ULV 733 CPU (855GME chip set)，512MB DDR RAM，10.6 inch WXGA LCD (a very bright wide screen mini laptop with brightness of 240cd/m2)，80GB hard drive，and an internal DVD/CD -RW Drive. It also got both USB and Fire Wire ports, also D-SUB, Type II PC card slot, MMC/SD/MS/MS Pro multi card reader and built-in 802.11b/g wireless card. The advantage of this mini-laptop is it's crystal clear wide screen LCD display.

These are the top three mini laptops in the market today. However the mini laptops are often expensive and when you put all the processing power into a compact package, you can expect things may go wrong soon or later. So, choose wisely and carefully.

Sony launches lightweight business subnote PC

Sony is making an aggressive move into the business computing market with the launch in Japan on Wednesday of the “Vaio Business” brand and a lightweight laptop computer that’s the product of feedback from more than a thousand business people.

The company, which is already one of Japan’s top laptop PC makers, hopes to expand its enterprise business by 50 percent year-over-year between now and 2009 so it accounts for 30 percent of domestic computer sales in 2009.

To kick-off this more aggressive push to enterprise customers, Sony will begin selling on December 2 the Vaio Type G laptop, starting at ¥165,000. The computer is the product of feedback from about 1,300 people and is also the lightest 12.1in laptop on the market, according to Sony. At 898g the computer’s light weight surprised most people who picked it up at a Tokyo news conference on Wednesday.

The secret to the Type G’s lightness comes in part from a carbon body. Sony has also employed carbon in the heatsink for the processor and graphics chips to reduce the size and weight. The machine will work for about 6 hours on a fully charged standard battery and will survive a drop from a table without damage, said Sony. There’s also a light AC adapter that is the same thickness as the computer so it won’t cause a bulge in a bag.

“The small, thin and light market within the business market is growing and that’s the area where we can show our strength in terms of product and technology,” said Yoshihisa Ishida, a Sony senior vice president and head of the company’s Vaio business, in an interview.

Sony has also prepared a package of aftercare services to cater to business users. These include a help desk dedicated to Vaio Business customers, a 3-year guarantee and — for the legions of Japanese salarymen who take frequent business trips — the promise that a service technician will come to wherever the customer is should that be necessary.

Vaio Business as a brand will initially be restricted to Japan, said Ishida. In some markets, such as the U.S., the company already promotes laptops to enterprise users under names like Vaio Professional.

“I think it’s not easy to do,” Ishida said about the difficulty Sony might face in convincing Japanese companies that it’s machines are just as suited to business as they are to consumer use. He noted that Sony has been getting into the business market in other countries for several years and enterprise customers make up a “pretty high revenue share” of its total business in some countries.
