Essential Tips for First Time New Laptop Buyers

Buy New LaptopWhether you may be a college student or a budding entrepreneur that is starting his or her home business, acquiring a laptop is no longer considered a privilege. It is now considered as a necessity for a number of reasons. The advent of more powerful laptops that could match the abilities of desktop PCs has made computer laptops to provide users the flexibility to attend to one’s business or scholastic requirements, be it preparing for a business presentation while in the plane or simply taking down notes during a class discussion.

With so many computer laptop models of varying prices and features out in the market, buying one can tend to be overwhelming, especially if you do not have a particular model in mind. Here are just tips that would be helpful for you to decide the right laptop for you.

new laptopKnow What You Need/Requirements

Let’s face it! Computer laptops do not come in cheap. As such, you would want to get the most out of what you would be shelling out. This is why it is extremely important to determine what you see yourself doing with the laptop. For example, if you are a graphics design artist, you would need to find a laptop that contains the fastest microprocessor developed and a large memory for you to easily create your designs and store them conveniently in your laptop without fearing that you would be loosing space or slowing down as a result of the different applications that you would be using. On the other hand, if you are business entrepreneur that would be utilizing basic functions such as creating presentations for meeting or documents, getting a laptop with a 512MB RAM memory, an 80GB data memory space and Wi-Fi capable would be perfect for your needs.

Be Realistic about Your Budget
While many computer shops over the Internet and in local shopping centers would require you to pay the full amount outright, there are a few that do allow you to pay in installments. Make sure to inquire as to whether installment payments are offered for the laptop model that you are interested in and make sure that your budget fits the payment scheme.

Check Laptop Reviews
There are a number of websites such as CNet.com that would provide first-time buyers reviews on the performance of a particular laptop model. It is important to take time to read through some of these if you have been recommended a particular laptop model to ensure that all your needs would be easily met by that laptop model.

Ask for Suggestions
If you do not have a particular laptop model in mind, computer store assistants would be more than happy to provide you a few suggestions that would be within your budget and would be able to meet your needs. This would greatly narrow down your options and greatly help you make your selection more efficiently.

Take Note of Inclusive Items
Depending on the computer laptop brand, computer stores in local shopping malls and over the Internet offer a number of different packages from the Operating System to warranties. Make sure that you include this in your inquiries to your local store assistant or through the online customer service on online stores.

Apple reveals tiny new laptop

Apple reveals tiny new laptopApple CEO and co-founder Steve Jobs shows off the new Macbook Air ultra portable laptop during his keynote speech at Macworld.

Apple chief executive Steve Jobs took the wraps off a super-slim new laptop overnight, unveiling a tiny personal computer that is less than 2cm thick and turns on the moment it is opened.

At the Macworld Conference & Expo in San Francisco, Jobs also confirmed the tech giant's foray into online movie rentals, revealing an alliance with all six major movie studios to offer films over high-speed internet connections soon after they are released on DVD.

Always a showman, Jobs unwound the string on a standard-sized manila office envelope and slid out the ultra-thin MacBook Air notebook computer to coos and peals of laughter from disbelieving fans at the conference.

"It's the world's thinnest notebook (computer)," Jobs said with a smile. "We went out and looked at all the thin notebooks out there and tried to distill a best-of-breed."

At its beefiest, the new 1.36kg computer is 1.9 cm thick; at its thinnest, 0.4 cm, he said. It comes standard with an 80 gigabyte hard drive, with the option of a 64GB flash-based solid state drive as an upgrade.

The MacBook Air will be available in Australia in February at a recommended retail price of $2499.

World-leading computer chip maker Intel shrunk one of its fast dual-core processors by 60 per cent at Apple's urging to fit the power into MacBook Air, according to Jobs.

"When we started this project we didn't think it was possible," Intel chief executive Paul Otellini said, briefly joining Jobs on stage.

"There were times we sweated over it, but at the end of the day we innovated."

MacBook Air features innovations inspired by Apple's iPods and iPhone, according to Jobs.

For example, the compact hard drives in the laptops are the kind used in iPods, while touch pad controls in the computers mimic touch-screen "gesture" capabilities in iPhones.

"We learned from the iPhone and put it in our other computers," Jobs said

The movie rental revelation capped months of speculation that an Apple movie rental service was in the offing. The service launched in the US today and will roll out internationally later this year, although it remains to be seen whether the service will appear in Australia.

The future of laptop screens

Top Modern LaptopMost modern laptop screens use a technology known as LCD or Liquid Crystal Display, in order to display their picture on the screen. This technology has been around for many years and is not the standard on modern laptops. A new technology is on the rise however, known as AMOLED or Active-matrix organic light-emitting diode, A refined form of OLED. The main advantages of this are that OLED’s do not require a backlight, meaning the screens that utilise these can be made much smaller, and can also display much deeper blacks than an LCD equivalent, as well as being able to display sharper pictures. AMOLED screens are OLED’s that have been combined with TFT technology to make them suitable for use in computer screens. The ‘Active Matrix’ part of AMOLED simply deals with assigning individual pixels to the screen. More interestingly , AMOLED screens do not have to be entirely opaque, leading to the development of some very interesting computer screens, where only the area that is being used is transparent.

Asus Touch-screen Laptop

New Laptop 2010laptop is rumoured to be completely touch-screen, meaning the actual screen as well as where they keyboard would normally be found. The bottom touch-screen completely replaces the physical QWERTY keyboard that we are familiar with.

The new laptop from Asus is also rumoured to be made available 2010 when the latest Windows 7 operating system might be launched. The main problem of having two screens is the amount of battery power required to run this thing. Although any battery will run it, the problem with two screens is that a regular capacity battery would be drained far quicker then normal.

I do like the idea of a touch-screen keyboard, but they obviously have their drawbacks such as the lack of decent tactile feedback. A lot can change in a couple of years though and a better feedback system may become available.

New Laptop 2010

New Laptop 2010CES 2010 certainly has a great many products lined up which are totally cool. However, the event is also seeing a number of inane products which are completely packed with technology, laptop but with a really bad theme. One such product is the new with a transparent AMOLED display. It comes from the group behind OLED display and has a resolution of just 960×540.

It is 38% transparent and I still don’t get the idea of having a transparent screen, unless you want to know what is happening just behind it. Human eyes have enough capacity to see what is happening behind the laptop screen without even having to bend behind the laptop. Read More

Top Notebook Computer

Top Notebook ComputerAcer have announced their new mini/micro notebook, the Atom powered Aspire One, which, despite being billed as ‘not just another notebook’ bears all the hallmarks of being yet another Eee PC competitor complete with 8.9” LED display (the same display size as all Eee PC’s except the newly announced Eee PC 1000/H) and which comes with either Win XP or Linux operating systems preloaded.

Interestingly, Acer have chosen to announce their new Aspire One just when we are expecting an imminent official announcement from Dell that they will also be entering the mini/micro notebook market with a device known, at this stage, as the Mini Inspiration but then again, what with the Computex presently in full swing, perhaps this should not come as too much of a surprise.

Top Notebook ComputerSo, apart from the aforementioned 8.9” display and Atom power under the hood, what does Acer’s Aspire One have to offer us?

Size-wise the Aspire One measures in at a compact 9.8” x 6.7” x 1.14” whilst it weighs in at ‘little more than two pounds’. The ‘masterpiece of technological simplicity’, as Acer’s press release bills it, sports a battery life of just 6 hours, a screen resolution of 1024×600, an integral CrystalEye webcam, comes with integrated 802.11b/g WiFi with 3G connectivity being a possible future option and offers either 512MB or 1GB of RAM dependant on the OS opted for (Linux and XP respectively).

Storage comes in the form of either a NAND flash module of 8GB or an 80GB internal HDD with a built-in memory card reader – supporting Secure Digital, MultiMediaCard, Memory Stick, Memory Stick PRO and xD-Picture Cards – offering ‘absolute data freedom’.

The ‘masterpiece of technological simplicity’ (we would bill it somewhat differently – perhaps ‘undoubtedly competent, reasonably desirable but hardly mind-blowing Eee PC competitor’), otherwise known as the Acer Aspire One, will, according to Acer’s press release, be made available in blue and white (with ‘two new soft, warm tones’ in the form of brown and – yes – pink becoming available at a later late) and will retail for around the not unreasonable $380 price point sometime in Q3 of this year.

Let’s hope that Dell’s Mini Inspiration is, to excuse almost a pun, somewhat more inspiring and at least brings something a little different to the table.
